Among the first things that people think of when they think of Churches is the concept of salvation.  Indeed, a great many people are saved in many of the region's places of worship.  But people are not the only benefactor of a Church's saving grace.  A number of vintage streetlights have found salvation on the grounds of some of the area's churches.  These lights reward their saviors by providing a serene atmosphere to their grounds that modern lights just can't match.  Here then is a look at some of the vintage streetlights saved from doom by some of the area's places of worship!

ST. AMBROSE CHURCH
Park Heights and Wylie Avenues

St. Ambrose is home to a pair of vintage Novalux Incandescent lamps with nice, stylish braided poles.  These lights are easily visible from Park Heights, and are located just South of the main Church building.  A particularly nice touch to these lights is that they retain their painted tops, for a more vintage look.  Fortunately, on the morning of my visit, the lights were illuminated, making for even better photos.

GOVANS PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
York and Orkney Roads

About a half-dozen Novalux lights survive on the grounds of the Govans Presbyterian Church, located just South of the Senator Movie Theatre.  While the lights do not contain painted tops, they are well cared for, and some variety in pole types can be observed among them, including the late model mock fluted pole style.  The lights, while visible from the street, are more handily viewed from within the Church grounds.

ASCENSION LUTHERAN CHURCH
York Road and La Paix Lane

A short distance further out York Road reveals even more old Novalux lights in Church service as a pair of Novalux lights stand guard over the Ascension Lutheran Church just above Stevenson Lane.  Originally, three lights survived here, but one was apparently damaged and replaced with a repro light.  In any event, the two survivors seem to be in remarkable shape.

BROWN MEMORIAL CHURCH
Charles Street and Woodbrook Lane

Of even more vintage than the Novalux survivors are six old Gas Light standards that have been converted to serve the grounds of Brown Memorial Church near Murray Hill.  While the lights seem to be an odd contrast to Brown's modern architecture, it is certainly a great relief to see them surviving intact.
