Super Streetcar Sunday Photo Blitz

Postby AdamFlx3204 » Sun Feb 07, 2010 2:22 pm

..or at least a bowlful of PCCs. Can I say it like this without the NFL killjoys swooing in?

Well, like many of you, my mobility is limited on this post blizzard Sunday, so of course, it makes the ideal day to scan slides and post them. It also makes the ideal day to view posted slides. So I elected to do the scanning and posting, and if you're reading this, you elected to view them.

Below are a nice handful of shots taken in the 1950's and 1960's of yellow PCC's. I've tried as best I could to determine these slides to be originals and not duplicates, and most have imprinted slide stamps that mirror the date of the photo. Thus, I offer the disclaimer that I believe these to be original, and worthy of sharing. If you know of any that are "production" slides, feel free to let me know so I can remove them before the copyright hounds get wind of them.

By and large, these seem to follow two main formulas: Kodachromes whose colors are still intact but whose exposure latitude is very narrow, and Ektachromes whose shadow details and tonal ranges are broader, but whose pigments have faded over time. I've tried to address these nominally, but the results may still be imperfect. Further, some have other dust, blotch, and streaking blemishes that I'm not quite patient enough to fully retouch all day. Photo credits are where known.

In the meantime, enjoy...

Car 7034 saunters through the mill area of Bethlehem Steel's Sparrows Point complex on the #26 line.

Image
Though the system had whittled to just two lines by the early 1960's, there were still oddball turnarounds that made for interesting backdrops. Car #7350 uses the Pearl Street turnaround on September 23, 1963. This car was at one time envisioned as a sister restoration for #7407.

Image
Later that same afternoon, car #7077 takes recovery at Towson on the #8 line in the fading light.

At the same layover, the Operator of #7403 takes a breather before his southbound journey.

#7137 heads east on Edmondson Avenue near Ashburton Street in early 1963. Arnold Pruitt Photo.

Image
Also in early 1963 is seen #7341 heading down Poplar Grove Street at Belmont Avenue.

Image
It's November 2, 1963, and #7382 appears to be working a last day charter at what appears to be the stub track at Walbrook Junction.

Image
A Joe Lau image that I really like - 7119 making the stop at Fayette and Liberty as the construction goes up and patrons bustle around.

Image
On first glance, I thought this shot of #7128 on what looks to be Gay Street was taken after an incident of rocks being thrown at the car. However, on further glance, it's obvious that the streetcar had an accident with something carrying hay. In any event, it definitely makes me glad that vehicle windows are now made of lucite.

Image
Car #7133 visits Overlea Loop on a sunny October 27, 1963.

Image
On the same day, #7138 lazes in the sun at the Gardenville Yard.

Image
On a snowy day in January 1963, Overlea Loop plays host to this scene of an arriving #15 line PCC.

7115 at Walbrook - October 21, 1963.

Image
7106 looks a bit snazzier than your typical aged BTC PCC as it visits Towson in what appears to be a late 1950's scene.

Image
One presumes that #7103 may be a barn pull out in early 1963. I've never seen a #8 this empty at 42nd Street!

Image
The Operator of #7357 is probably best to play it safe in this squeeze situation on what looks to be South Eutaw Street.

Well, I hope you guys are ready for a SECOND HALF! I scanned some more originals!

Dan, your suggestion may well make sense. I only hope they've upgraded their scanner down there. I recall it only did 1200DPI. My cantankerous old Benq at least does 2700 DPI. Ray was interested in doing a BSM Calendar to sell in the bookstore a while back, but we couldn't seem to get the Library to agree to taking the slides off premises for a couple hours for scanning, nor reproducing for the benefit of the museum.

Car #7133 pauses at the "temporary" Gardenville yard on October 27, 1963. The end was rapidly approaching.

As iconic a backdrop image then as it is now, the Bromo Seltzer Tower stands proudly behind this scene at Baltimore and Pearl Streets on September 23, 1963.

Believed to be a late September shot from 1963, this image of #7083 on York Road at the City Line captures much of the early 1960's nuance.

Image
Once a busy terminal, Belvedere's importance was dwindling by November 29, 1959, when #7072 paid it a visit on a "selected service" 15. It had about 10 weeks to go as a terminal and division, calling it quits on Valentine's Day of 1960.

This shot of car #7077 on Denison Street at Walbrook Avenue from January 2, 1963 was badly faded to dull red, but Vuescan and Picasa did a great restoration job.

AND ITS UNDERWOOD for the WIN!!!

I have about a dozen original slides in my collection that are among the nicest I have. The exposure and focus are top notch, and you can tell the lens they were shot through was of excellent quality. Even the Kodachrome they were shot on seems to have gotten the best possible processing, without streaking or fading of any kind. They are all stamped with a novel array of stampings that include "by underwood" in the lower right corner. Does anyone know who this is? His compositional style is creative, and his shots really do tend to be more fascinating than the typical wedges common at the time.

Here are four of the Underwood shots:

Image
Car #7083 rests on the sidewalk track at Belvedere Car House on January 24, 1960. Zooming the shot fully in, the TDH-4507 in the backdrop appears to be coach #1484.

Image
An August 26, 1962 visit to Catonsville Junction yields a nice image of #7105 paying a visit.

Image
Another Catonsville Junction shot, this one dated November 5, 1961.

Image
If you get lemons, make lemonade. In the Transit Photography forum, I discussed the very "phenomenon" of cars ruining photos, but in this shot, the impeding auto almost looks like it was MEANT to be at Aigburth and York on this morning of October 14, 1962. The result is actually a photo I LIKE looking at! Amazing!

Going for TWO (more).

The first shot *looks* to be original Kodachrome though I seem to recall seeing it in print somewhere. Perhaps its an early duplicate, as it carries the red border mount of the 1950's, without process date stamp. In any event, it's almost too nice not to share.

Image

The next shot is pretty obviously a dupe, but I've yet to see a color shot of it, so I've done as best I can with it (it was extremely faded) to restore its natual colors. Enjoy!

Adam -

What! A photo of the "Safety Car"! Amazing! Bonus Points? Signed for Route #4! The green/ aqua/ whatever it properly was seems to more faithful to original as not. It is not "spot on" for the color. I'm keeping in mind it may be the opinion according to Ektachrome. The purists were given to bickering over the merits of the media!

If we need a Barry Levinson moment, perhaps it is the shot at Denison. Otherwise, the orange and gray paint always looked nasty, even on its best days! It blended in nicely, though, with the thoroughly grungy backgrounds of the time. Levinson did a great deal of romanticizing, IMHO. Luckily, he had the production budgets to back it up. His work remains a set of charming fantasies...

Oh, and then the marvelous shot of a Salute To Rust Belt America in the photo of Sparrows Point. Lucky the photog didn't have an encounter with the Beth Steel goons (or "Pinkertons") who enforced the company delusional paranoid secrecy mandates! Those people were awful! The company never did have a magic formula for world beating product, anyway. (See the Mark Reutter book.)

Underwood in a class all by himself. He was one of the Washington ERA - NCHMT fellows. Several reliable for superb (obsessive/ compulsive) work. Perhaps widely agreed Best Of Class in work of Ara Mesrobian, of same, card carrying affiliation.

Vern: I agree with you on the dismal yellow and grey paint that BTC used. It only looked good during the first week out of the paint shops at Carroll Park. Too much yellow. Very monotonous.

Mike Farrell recalled that when he returned to BAL after an absence of some years, the cars reminded him of pumpkins with frost on their tops.

After BTC closed down the Carroll Park shops, some cars were given a touch up painting at Irvington to use up the old paint. At first the company sprayed the cars but after the Fire Department banned this, the shop men went back to brush painting. AFAIK the roofs were never touched. Very often it was only a partial repaint: front end and doors.

The Safety Car was 7338, IIRC. It was probably the last PCC to be completely repainted at Carroll Park. It operated on the "farewell to the 32 line" trip during the NMRA convention in Baltimore late in August, 1955. It replaced a St. Louis car (7301) which had damaged its wheel guard on Liberty Heights Avenue during the first leg of the trip. The PCC tagged along behind 6119 to handle the overflow passengers. Somehow the NRHS got permission to use the car on the trip. The Witt was no longer owned by BTC but was stored with the rest of the collection at Edmondson division.

Brilliner -

And, so, you allude to "...the same old crowd..." on the Baltimore scene. In many ways, I suppose it was BSME that was the "incubator" in much of it. IMHO, my own perception, appearance of the 6119 Car reports the fine hands of George Nixon, Carvey Davis, probably Dick Lloyd in all of it. At this distant date, who knows those in group of "...they also served..."!...

BTW. The AUG 1955 date does confirm what we already know: That is, the complete "write down" of the Baltimore Cars in by JUN 1955 latest. Not bad! A quarter century of reliable service from the particular fleet! (In a "what if" scenario: Carroll Park could have done a "fix, patch and paint" for at least an added ten years on the cars, IMHO). (Two tone green with white roof, anyone? <G>)...

Adam if you have slides you would like to give to Baltimore Streetcar Museum(BSM) they should go to Maryland Rail Heritage Library (MRHL). We, the committe, are on the property each Wednesday and also the second Sunday of each month. Being a member of the committe I would be happy to work out a time that works for both of us to meet with you. All of us on the committee are always looking for BTC, UR&E, WB&A, B&A,H&F electric photos and also all Maryland steam line, etc photos. Let me know what day/time we can meet. :D

Adam -

The more I look at the #4 Line "Safety Car" image, the more it bothers me! Is the source image in Ektachrome? The base green appears to be one of the endless strange color palettes that came with the film product.

Given this wondrous new image handling software, is it possible to: "Back out" of the notorious "blue bias" of Ektachrome? Then, impose the "red bias/ warm tones" of Kodachrome? The base green on the car image might respond very nicely. You don't have to show your work, should it get embarassing! <G>

Thomas [Tom] Underwood, a superb railroad/electric railway photographer, is a retired US Government worker currently residing in Arlington, VA. He, along with Ara Mesrobian, another extremely talented WAS area photographer, provided well-received color slide programs at several BAL NRHS banquets during the 1960's. In fact, at one point-in-time Ara was the official National NRHS photographer. Both gentlemen were quite active in WAS trolley-fan circles during the 1950's-1960's, and each was a world traveler.

The name of Joe Lau appears in one of the above captions. Joe was an avid railfan photographer who initially was fond of 620 size film. During the late 1940's Joe could be found faithfully at the Carroll Park streetcar scrap line as the doomed cars were being placed upon railroad flat cars for their final journey to the boneyard. Eventually Joe became an operator for BTC, working out of Edmondson Ave CH. IIRC, that front-end of a BTC semi-convertible car now on display at the BSM is from Joe's collection. Unfortunately, Joe died young.

Adam,

Take Jerry Kelly's sage advice and work directly with him or any other member of the MRHL volunteers without having to go through a "middleman." They will be sure to help you out. IIRC, BSM did a calendar back around 1994. It was a calendar which depicted "then and now" shots of Baltimore, the "old" coming from the MRHL and the "new" done by Fred Schneider. As I understand it, the calendar was quite attractive, but there was a problem ... the Museum had a lot of unsold calendars.

Cheers!

P.S.

A very nostalgic set of pix, to be sure.

A marvelous gallery, to be sure. Just adding a couple of notes that might be interesting:

* The lone shot of that inbound Sparrows Point car was taken at the entrance to the shipyard property, a few hundred yards east of the Bear Creek drawbridge. Did you notice the Studebaker Hawk in the parking lot just off to the side of the p-r-w?

* That shot of a car northbound on York Road is most definitely from about 1958: the evidence, apart from the vintage autos, is the presence of the bridge carrying the Ma and Pa over York Road in the background.

As I mentioned to Adam in a PM, I have a few color photographs of the front, left side, and rear of the Safety Car (7338) that I took one Sunday afternoon when it was first out in a line up of car in the yard alongside Belvedere. As soon as Adam and I can work out a meeting he can use the photos (which were taken by a 10 year old kid at the time) on BTCo.
