Lexington Street demolition underway

Postby Norm J » Fri Jan 15, 2010 6:22 pm

I see in todays Sun that demotition has begun. A photo on the business page shows the razing of commercial buildings on the north side of the 200 block of W. Lexington Street. Does anyone work or travel down there who can get some pics? Is this not the block where the Keith Theater was located? Assuming the autotorium portion of the Keith would have been in the back, did it still exist in some form? The lobby/entrance probably became retail.

Run--don't walk--to Kilduff's. This Baltimore web site by Thomas Paul has a lot of details about the old Keith's Theater. The front facade was turned into a business location after the auditorium was torn down. Kilduff's has pictures of the theatre during its active days and after the adutiorium was torn down.

According to another web site, cinematreasures.org., Keith's closed its doors in 1955. The last movie shown there was "Shane".

There is an article by Jacques Kelly in the Sun of January 16, 2010 recalling the latter days of that block of Lexington Street.

After reading that post, Adam and I went down on Sunday and got all sorts of Photos. So far, it looks like the Facade of the Keiths might escape demolition, but we shall see. The old New isn't as lucky, and I doubt the old theatre makes it to March. I also see the razing of the Howard as well. ( Just a guess ). We got about 152 photos today and if any of you guys want any of them , just let me know. Also got a few pictures of the Idle Hour Theatre on Howard Street. We got the entire block and the place was deserted...................

Here's a somewhat obstructed 1969 shot of the block mentioned...
